thesis statement
Giovanni da Verrazzano began exploring North America in 1523 for King Francis I of France to find new trade routes to the Pacific Ocean on the urgent request of French merchants and financiers. This urgency began Giovanni da Verrazzano’s career of navigation and exploration of the Americas along the Eastern coast.
Giovanni da Verrazzano’s lust for being a navigator for the French was a big reason for him to make the voyage for King Francis I of France. He had already made a voyage to the Americas with his own captain and crew. While on that trip, he made a solo exploration of Newfoundland and the St. Lawrence River in Canada. He had heard about the new lands and how Columbus had made the voyage with his own crew and Giovanni da Verrazano wanted to do the same.
Giovanni da Verrazzano used the information he found during his trips to make maps for others to use for exploration. Exploreres used these maps for years to navigate through the East Coast of the Americas. However, these maps proved to be useless, because his information was incorrect.
